CASTINE

MARITIME TRADITION

Castine is one of the oldest communities in North America. The town has been occupied continuously since the early 1600s as the site of numerous trading posts, forts, missions, and permanent settlements of France, Holland, England, and colonial America.

Steeped in history, architecturally preserved, rich in culture, adorned by elms and surrounded by the sea, a visit to Castine is a step into coastal Maine’s past, present, and future. For a truly one of a kind experience, hop aboard a guided historical tour on “Scarlett”, Castine Touring Company's bright red, all-electric vehicle.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • The Castine Historical Society, located in the Abbott School and Samuel P. Grindle House on the town common, serves as a window into Castine’s extraordinary past. It houses permanent and summer exhibitions, lectures, house and garden tours and historic reenactments.

  • Tour Maine Maritime Academy’s 35-acre campus, including the State of Maine training ship which is docked in the harbor most of the year.

  • Castine Kayak Adventures offers daily kayak tours and bike rentals for visitors looking to experience the great outdoors.
